Bullying STOPS Here!

Bullying

There’s been far too many incidences of bullying happening, and it’s been heartbreaking to see it only get worse. I’m writing to ask all who read this to please help spread the word that it gets better. Post a photo of yourself as a kid when you were bullied, then post a photo of you now to show what it looks like to get passed it. It does get better and children that are being bullied need to know this!!

If you are someone who is currently being bullied:
Please don’t give up. People only bully those who they think will outshine them. Know your worth, know you’re a gift. Hold on just a little longer and the world will catch up to you and see how beautiful a person you truly are, I promise!

Please share this. Please spread the word. Please be kind, that’s all it takes.

40′s Pinup Photos Made With High-Speed Milk

By Polina Roytman

Milky PinUps04

I first heard of this on SLR Lounge and was so taken by it that I had to share it on here. Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz, a London based photographer, is in the works of finishing up a 12 month pinup calendar circa those of the 1940′s and 1950′s. Except in Jaroslav’s calendar the models are wearing milk frozen with high-speed strobes.

The dresses on the models are created by layering splashes from hundreds of photographs. Each photograph uses real milk splashed on real bodies, then layered in Photoshop to complete the dress.

The inspiration for the photos came from illustrations done for pinup calendars by the likes of Gil Elvgren, Alberto Vargas, and Greg Hildebrandt; along with images that were featured on Brown & Bigelow calendars.

There are currently 9 completed photographs, with the remaining 3 [October, November, December] to be completed soon. The calendar will be on pre-order starting in November. We hear that Lilia will be Miss October. Lilia is the short version of Yelizaveta, so you know we can’t wait to see the reveal of this one and will be pre-ordering our copy come November 1st!

The 9 completed photos are shown below. Leave a comment letting us know which is your favorite!

Tyra Banks Presents: 15

Tyra Banks Presents: 15

By Polina Roytman

Tyra Banks presents 15

In honor of New York Fashion Week, the incomparable Tyra Banks teamed up with photographer Udo Spreitzenbarth to pay tribute to some of the world’s most iconic and beloved supermodels in an exhibit titled Tyra Banks Presents: 15.

As stated on Spreitzenbarth’s site: “Named for the number of the iconic women portrayed, and the age at which Tyra Banks began her modeling career, 15 includes interpretive images of Banks personifying the supermodels: Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Lauren Hutton, Jerry Hall, Iman, Kate Moss, Twiggy, Brooke Shields, Claudia Schiffer, Carmen Dell’Orefice, and Grace Jones. Banks also portrays the new wave of talent that has resurrected the genre: Kate Upton, Karlie Kloss, and Cara Delevingne. Rounding out the 15, an adult Tyra emulates herself at 15 years old.”

Banks tweeted about the show stating “I’ve put my own spin on #NYFW w/a tribute to some of the fiercest #SuperModels ever. Unretouched. Real. Raw.”

The dream team behind this shoot is none other than Celebrity Stylist and Creative Director Ty-Ron Mayes, Make-up Artist Valente Frazier, Hair Stylist Sher Rae Tucker, Co-Producer Oscar Reyes, and once again the photographic genius of Udo Spreitzenbarth. I had the pleasure of assisting the one and only Ty-Ron Mayes on this project, and am so proud to be part it! All photos are 7′ x 5′ and will be on display at Jacks Studios in Chelsea, NY until November 8, 2013.

All photos are shown below. Enjoy!

WEBBG-STAR-STRUCK-VINTAGE-CLOTHING

In honor of the grand opening of their new Nashville location, we are making Star Struck Vintage Clothing our Pick of the Week!

Located in New York City’s West Village, and with their new location in Nashville’s Edgehill Village, one block off Music Row, Star Struck was founded in 1980 and is a family-run business. They offer a cornucopia of vintage treasures for men, women, and children. Their clothing ranges from the 1930′s to the 1980′s. One of the store owners, Shane, is probably the coolest gal you’ll ever meet. If you’re lucky enough to show up when she’s running the store you’ll find yourself listening to good ol’ country music while she helps you track down that one item that has eluded you for weeks.

Even I don’t wake up looking like Cindy Crawford

“Even I don’t wake up looking like Cindy Crawford.”

By Polina Roytman

Photo-for-cindycrawford-article

I received some incredible feedback to the Anyone Can Be Photogenic! 8 Easy Steps to Looking Great in Photos post, but have also gotten some feedback from young girls stating they love the article because they want to look “like the models in the magazines do.” Reading that pushed me to write this post.

It is important to know that every editorial photo you see in a magazine, unless stated otherwise, is retouched. It is a fantasy and that is why you are buying the magazine. The problem today is that most people get down on themselves when they view those photos and feel they don’t measure up. First thing to know and remember is that no one looks like those photos, not even the model herself. It takes an incredible team of hugely talented individuals to make that photo look as good as it does. The makeup, the hair, the clothes, the photographer, the lighting, the airbrushing. Cindy Crawford said it best when she stated “Even I don’t wake up looking like Cindy Crawford.”

The photo above on the left has been retouched. The photo above on the right is the original. There’s nothing wrong with the original, yet the retouched photo is what you would end up seeing in a magazine. I did a slight experiment and posted the original photo as my Facebook profile and it has gotten more likes than any other photo I have ever posted. Even more than a photo of a ridiculously cute baby. Keep this in mind the next time there’s a camera pointed at you and shine that natural smile, knowing that you look great just as you are, no team necessary!

WEBSM-Batman-24x36_1024x1024

Calm The Ham was founded in June 2012 by architect and designer Cathryn Lavery who was looking for a way to ignite, convey, and create art on her own terms. She joined forces with friends and fellow artists Josh Latta, a cartoon genius, and architect / designer Matt Drury. Together they became a band of independent artists fighting life’s monotony through design; doing their best to make the world just that little bit more awesome with their work.

Some of our favorite prints include Memento [$19] and The Usual Suspects [$19], both of which hang in our living room. As well as the Evolution of Batman [$38] and the Nashville Skyline [$28].
